Politics, Place and Family is a feature length documentary film chronicling the Robinson Family's involvement in Colorado Democratic Politics over the last 80 plus years.
In the Summer of '08 the city of Denver, Colorado is electric with anticipation as the Democratic National Convention convenes to nominate a historic candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Change is the buzzword of the day as record crowds join the delegates in cheering the nominee, William Jennings Bryan. 100 years later, the city is again caught up in the excitement of a historic nomination and referendum for change when Barack Obama accepts the delegates' nomination in front of 80,000 supporters at Invesco Field at Mile High. In the intervening years, the Robinson family has remained actively involved in Colorado Democratic politics and continues a legacy begun by William and Rose Robinson not long after the Convention of 1908.
Politics, Place and Family follows the grand-daughter of William and Rose Robinson, Kate Robinson, as she travels to Denver, the city of her birth, to attend the 2008 Democratic National Convention and reconnect with her politically active family living there. Kate's experiences at the Convention (DNC) in Denver are augmented by interviews with Kate and other Robinson family members as well as by photographs and descriptions of the 1908 DNC. In addition, the story of the Robinson's in Colorado is told using still photographs and black and white and color 8-mm film footage of the family shot over the course of 50 years - from Trinidad in the 1930's to Denver in the 1980's .
Principal photography took place over five days in Denver during the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Kate, Robby (me) and Matt Robinson all traveled to Denver for the festivities and to spend time with our family there. Kate and Robby attended Barack Obama's nomination at Invesco Field on August 28th, 2008.
Filming was also done in Philadelphia during the Democratic Primary in April of 2008.
Post-production is underway and we hope to have a completed film by early 2011.
